What Is Your Name? is a story centered archival website that interrogates the narrative of one’s relationship with their names and digital presence. The website sheds light on the concept of “digital selves” and how they influence the perception of one’s name in digital spaces. Ultimately, the project investigates the potential of digital spaces for reclaiming cultural and social identity through names.

Rooted in traditional Uyghur oral history practice and cultural pattern based storytelling (insert Moqqam), I took inspiration from my radio interview work and Gilem Doppa to build the website. The color system is inspired by Uyghur traditional silk weaving material, Etlas. Each patch of gilem pixel guides visitors to the story archive supported by both text and audio.

Reflecting the cultural and social language structures that I grew up in, I have created surveys in Chinese and English to ask participants to share their stories between their names and digital presence. For the typography, I am using BDO Grotesk designed by Deni Anggara, to collect names in languages that represent part of the global diasporas.
