Til (Tongue)
Python, Video Archive, Website Design, Research 2023 ~

Til traces the connection between Central Asian string instruments and one’s reunion with the knowledge of their indigenous past, which empower the possibility of (re)imaging the future through instrumental sound and video. The video collage unravels emotions that are triggered by Central Asian string instruments played in familiar environments for anyone from the Central Asian diaspora to reconnect with media representations that are away from Euro-centric or East-centric gazes. Til is composed from an archive of video found online with english search terms such as “Uzbek Dutar”, “Uyghur Rawap”, or “Krygyz Komuz” and so on. Supplementing the video collage are written and imagery elements that provide historical and cultural context for viewers of all backgrounds to understand the encoded social and visual language within the video art.
